About

If you’re interested in a freelance copywriting career, you’ve come to the right place!

PattyWelcome to Copywriter Confessions. My name is Patty Harder and I’m a freelance copywriter. When I quit my job as the marketing manager for a software development company to launch my copywriting business, I had no idea how liberating (and scary!) self-employment would be. Six years later, I still love going to “work” each day. After all, what’s not to love about a 10-step commute in bedroom slippers and one of the most fulfilling careers imaginable?

My journey hasn’t been without its ups and downs. Sometimes, a slow month would leave me scrambling to pay the bills. Other times, there’s been so much work on my plate that I’ve had to outsource projects to other writers. But despite the peaks and valleys, nothing would entice me to trade what I’ve built for another corporate day job.

If you stick around, I’ll share my secrets.

I have over 15 years of writing and marketing experience and have been a fulltime freelance copywriter for six years. I’ve worked inside the corporate world as a marketing manager and outside that world as a freelance copywriter and marketing consultant. I’ve learned a thing or two along the way and can show you how to thrive as a freelance copywriter. If you want to learn from my experience (and mistakes), stick around. You’ll get free copywriting tips and insider secrets for growing your business.

How is this site different than the other blogs about freelance writing?

This site is different because it talks about freelance copywriting, which is a very specific (and high-paying) type of freelance writing work. This site is also different simply because I’m writing it. Every writer-turned-teacher brings something unique to the blogging table. My communication style is straight-forward, low-key and conversational. To illustrate my points, I use real examples from my business.

Hi Patty,

I love your website* (I linked via Peter Bowerman’s Well-Fed Writer page), and I suppose I’m just mailing because I’m making connections.

I’m a 25-year veteran schoolteacher dying to make the break into freelance copywriting. I’ve had enough of showing other human beings how to speak and write, and want to do it myself, instead of talking about it – I can make a sentence real well put together skillfuly and am a good spelur.

I Don’t know where to start really. My first degree was Literature, my M.A. is in Advanced Japanese Studies (but I don’t want to do translations), and basically all that I have going for me is that, despite the bad joke above, I really do seem to be good at this writing thing.

Do you know of a web site out there that is a sort of “Let’s-Brainstorm-How-We-Can-Squeeze-Every-Bit-of-Writing-Out-of-What-We-Already-Know” sort of place..?

Best Wishes,

Mark

* I like the site visually (black prose on a white background always looks great, and the blue font adds a touch of beauty and color, but also adds to the “clean” feel of the place); the graphics are simple and fresh; the visual balance is good (the page looks filled with information, but not cluttered); the substance is informative and interesting; and, most important of all, I like the tone of voice.
